Alberta iela 13 is arguably the most famous work of Mikhail Eisenstein in Riga. Built in 1904, it stands as a peak of Decorative Art Nouveau. For a photographer, this building is a masterclass in detail — everywhere you look, there is a story, a face, or a mythical creature looking back at you
The most iconic feature is the row of screaming masks at the top. They represent the intense emotional range that Art Nouveau often explores. To capture these, I recommend waiting for the ‘golden hour’ when the low sun creates long shadows, giving these stone faces a truly haunting and lifelike appearance
Don’t forget to look at the entrance. The symmetry of the sculptures and the intricate ironwork of the doors are perfect for architectural framing. Use a tripod if you want to capture the sharpest textures of the grey stone against the sky
